The Pathways to Independence is an innovative and unique school curriculum designed to prepare learners for their future beyond the classroom and school. With a focus on fostering independence and developing effective communication skills, this curriculum equips learners with the necessary tools to navigate their next steps successfully. It covers a wide range of National Curriculum subjects, including literacy, reading, maths, and vocational skills, all aimed at developing the confidence and competence needed to thrive in today’s society.

Our progressive approach is informed by the Preparation for Adulthood agenda as learners progress through the school, working within our developed Careers Programme. Learning is underpinned by our Total Communication structure, with tailored approaches to each learner’s needs woven throughout the curriculum. We recognise that each learner is unique; therefore, our curriculum is highly personalised and flexible, ensuring that individual goals, aspirations, interests, and challenges are all taken into account.

Our long-term curriculum programme builds on learners’ previous learning, as determined by robust assessment outcomes, enabling all learners to accumulate skills and knowledge in a smooth progression. This is achieved in a coherently planned way, while also working towards Personalised Learning Goals identified from their Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) outcomes.

At the core of The Pathways to Independence Curriculum is the belief that learners have the tools, resources, and support they need to make their own choices and become responsible, engaged citizens. Whether learners aspire to enter the workforce or pursue further education, our curriculum provides them with the necessary preparation to achieve their goals. In addition to academic rigor, we place a strong emphasis on developing practical life skills.

The Pathways to Independence Curriculum is, therefore, more than just a curriculum; it is a comprehensive approach to education that empowers learners to reach their full potential, improving their outcomes and preparing them well for the next stages and steps in life.

Curriculum Teams

Curriculum teams consist of teachers who are responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing various subject areas. Each team is led by a middle leader known as the Curriculum Team Lead. Their purpose is to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive curriculum that meets educational standards and addresses the diverse needs of learners. This involves coordinating resources, developing effective teaching and learning strategies, and evaluating the impact on pupil outcomes to continually enhance the quality of education.

Long-Term Programme

Our rolling long-term curriculum programme is a strategic framework that outlines the learning content for specific subjects and key stages. It ensures that all learners have access to a broad and balanced curriculum, regardless of their class. Unlike a static long-term programme, which covers a fixed timeline, a rolling programme is designed to be continuously refined, updated, and adjusted based on the evolving needs of learners and changes in educational standards or priorities. This approach ensures that the curriculum remains relevant, effective, and equitable for all learners.
